Bird Watching in Northern Cyprus

The location of Northern Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean is highly significant. It acts as a crossroads throughout the year for migrating birds from Europe to the North, the Middle East and Africa to the South.

In the period between March and May migrants, such as the Bee Eater, return from Africa to breed in Europe. Other examples include the, Roller, Hoopoe, Blue-cheeked Bee Eater, Bimaculate Lark, Citrine Wagtail and Richard's pipit. In the summer the migrating birds live alongside the resident birds of Cyprus and then migrate to spend the winter in Africa.

Cyprus Warbler and Cyprus Wheateater are some of the endemic species which ive and breed solely in North Cyprus. These are common in the Besparmak (Five Finger) mountain region, just above Kyrenia.

There is a Society for the Protection of Birds in Northern Cyprus called KUSKOR and they will be able to advise you of the best places to go at the various times of the year. Their telephone number from the UK is:  +90 392 815 7337.
